ART && CODE: homemade

This January 14-17, 2021, the STUDIO at CMU presents Art && Code: Homemade — a free online festival featuring casual talks by creators we admire, who work with digital tools and crafty approaches to make things that maintain the magic of something homemade.

Art && Code: Homemade will feature free online presentations by creators including: Irene AlvaradoKelli AndersonSarah Rosalena BradyMax BittkerLeah BuechleyLaura DevendorfCyril DiagneHannah Epsteinann haeyoungKelly HeatonClaire HentschkerLaJuné McMillianAri MelencianoJorvon Moss (@Odd_Jayy)Tatyana MustakosVernelle A. As the COVID pandemic continues and new lockdowns seem likely, we position the fifth edition of our flagship symposium as a focused opportunity to remain vitally creative and connected during isolated, indoor times. Art && Code: Homemade will feature a wide range of practitioners who are exploring poignant and personal new approaches to combining everyday materials, craft languages, and cutting-edge computational techniques. In this festival, we present an extended conversation between creators working with digital tools and crafty materials to make things that don't scale. Homemade is resourceful, personal, and community-driven; it's accessible and grassroots. Homemade means made with care. We will be fully remote with talks and gatherings between our homes and yours.

The STUDIO's long-running Art && Code event series is concerned with democratizing the cultural and creative potentials of emerging technologies. Half arts festival, half academic symposium, our four previous editions have focused on:

Art && Code: Homemade is organized by the CMU Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry, under the direction of Golan Levin, in collaboration with curatorial advisors Lea Albaugh, Madeline Gannon, and Claire Hentschker, and is made possible with support from the Media Arts program of the National Endowment for the Arts.
